Staying Focused on What Truly Matters: A Lesson for Community Bank CEOs

Skilled Talent Tsunami: A “Just-in-Time” Discussion for Forward-Thinking Senior Execs
January 22, 2025When I was learning to drive, my instructor gave me a piece of advice that has stuck with me ever since: “Don’t look at the parked cars on the side of the road.” It seemed counterintuitive at the time—after all, I was looking at them precisely to avoid hitting them. But I learned that our eyes tend to lead our bodies, and if you focus too much on what you’re trying to avoid, you’ll start drifting right toward it.
How Leadership Mirrors Driving
The same principle applies to leadership, especially in community banking. As CEOs, it’s easy to get distracted by the latest trends, new projects, or ideas that seem exciting at the moment. But when you take your eye off the core of your business, your organization starts to drift. It doesn’t matter how often you tell your team to stay focused on what’s important—if your actions don’t align with that focus, your words won’t carry weight.
Why Your Focus Sets the Tone
Why does this happen? It’s simple: in any organization, people naturally gravitate toward the interests of the person at the top. Even without explicit direction, your team will start paying attention to whatever you focus on. Your direct reports will pick up on what you’re passionate about, and before you know it, those distractions will trickle down through the entire organization.
When Distractions Take Over
I’ve seen this play out in companies of all sizes, including mine. There have been times when I got captivated by the “shiny objects” that came my way—new initiatives, exciting possibilities—and suddenly, the entire team was thinking about those things, too, losing sight of what was truly important.
The Powerful Impact of Leadership Focus
The lesson here is clear: as a leader, your attention and interests have a powerful impact on your organization. It’s tempting to chase after every new idea that comes your way, but it’s crucial to keep those impulses in check. You need to find a way to stay passionate about the core of your business—the services you provide, the customers you serve, and the mission that drives your bank.
Stay focused, stay disciplined and keep your eyes on the road ahead. Your organization will follow your lead, and that’s how you ensure your bank continues thriving in a world full of distractions.
